One of my favorite creatures on this earth has to be the Bear. Their size, power and speed can be very intimidating to say the least, and yet at the same time they invoke a very lovable quality about them. I suppose this is why the "Teddy Bear" was invented, although in reality, this is a creature to readily avoid in the wild, especially moms with cubs, and hungry males looking for an easy meal (that would be you).
This shot was taken in West Yellowstone in the summer of 2011. I made some adjustments to the lighting to accentuate his face and how he was using his heightened sense of smell. Bears are thought to have the best sense of smell of any animal on
earth. For example, the average dog's sense of smell is 100 times better
than a humans. A blood hound's is 300 times better. A bear's sense of
smell is 7 times better than a blood hound's or 2,100 times better than a
human.
